Emphasize simplicity, and, of course, map out your strategy for both the vertical and horizontal modes. If you are new to design, creating your first major design for the tablet, I would still suggest you pay attention to how grids are used in print. The rules for using grids are quite similar between the two platforms, so here is a quick primer from a print perspective.
Look at the space available and decide how many columns you will have. Most U.S. newspapers follow a six-column grid. In Europe and Asia we still find eight- or ten-column broadsheets. Tabloids can have four, five or six columns. Some publications will work with two different grids on top of each other. This is a good idea, providing more variety in the layout possibilities. Of course, these grids are too big for the 7- or 10-inch tablet, which features a far smaller canvas. For the tablet, I consider the default vertical grid to be three columns. But designers should consider a two-column grid as well. Even a one-column grid can work in many circumstances. With ample white space on both sides, a single column can be elegant and quite suitable for longer narratives, provided the story features subheads to break up the text.
Once you have created a vertical grid, the next step is to develop the horizontal. Most often I use a baseline grid, in which the grid lines align with the bottom of each line of body text. This creates a strong sense of order and proportion. A horizontal grid becomes particularly important for selling advertising space, as advertisers often buy ads by discrete units. As a baseline grid can be more difficult to implement in an app, I recommend that the designer pay special attention to the most important internal spaces—for example, the spacing between headers and the rest of the content on the screen, a headline and text, or a photo and caption.
Finally, you must decide on the use of other white space, such as the thickness of “gutters,” the amount of space between columns. Remember, it is this systematic use of white space that sets the mood, allows for typography and visual elements to stand out and gives your page or screen an overall clean and inviting look. A wonderful example is that of Switzerland’s Tages-Anzeiger app. TA’s grid features large amounts of carefully formed white space, making it easy for the user to visually enter a new screen. When designing for a tablet, considering the size and shape of the screen is a critical element in developing a grid. There is quite a difference between a grid created for the 4:3 iPad vs. one for the 16:9 Kindle Fire.
